Darlington transistors are a special transistor configuration that combines two bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) in a single package or circuit to achieve very high current gain. In this arrangement, the emitter of the first transistor is connected to the base of the second, so the overall current gain is the product of the gains of both transistors.
Because of this high gain, a very small input current at the base can control a much larger output current, making Darlington transistors ideal for driving high-current loads. However, they have a higher base–emitter voltage drop and slightly slower switching speed compared to single BJTs.
