The NASA AIS Radar Space Navigation Instrument is a compact marine navigation device that integrates AIS vessel tracking into a radar-style display, showing nearby Class A, Class B, and AIS‑SART targets in real time. It displays each vessel’s bearing, range, speed, course, MMSI, and position on a circular interface centered on the own-ship GPS location. The unit supports multiple range scales from 0.125 to 32 nautical miles and can track up to 30 targets simultaneously. Proximity alarms alert the user if a vessel enters a preset range. It operates on low power (12 VDC), features a backlit display for day/night readability, and interfaces via NMEA for GPS and other navigation data. The compact, weather-resistant housing makes it suitable for deck or binnacle mounting. While called a “radar,” it is a receiver-only system and does not detect non-AIS targets. Ideal for recreational and professional marine navigation, it enhances situational awareness and collision avoidance.
