Hydropower impulse turbines are a type of water turbine that convert the kinetic energy of high-velocity water jets into mechanical energy to generate electricity. Unlike reaction turbines, impulse turbines operate with water at high pressure directed through nozzles onto turbine buckets or blades, causing the rotor to spin.
They are especially suited for high-head, low-flow applications, such as mountainous regions or steep rivers. Common designs include the Pelton wheel, Turgo, and cross-flow turbines, each optimized for specific site conditions.
