Vertical-axis wind turbines are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is oriented vertically, and the blades rotate around the tower rather than horizontally. Unlike horizontal-axis turbines, VAWTs can capture wind from any direction, eliminating the need for yaw mechanisms. Their design makes them more suitable for urban, low-wind, and turbulent environments.
Although generally less efficient than horizontal-axis wind turbines, VAWTs are valued for their simplicity, lower installation height, and ability to operate in variable wind conditions. Common designs include the Darrieus type (curved blades for higher efficiency) and the Savonius type (scoop-like blades for high torque at low wind speeds).
