Small Scale Integration (SSI) refers to the earliest level of integrated circuit technology in which a small number of electronic components are fabricated onto a single chip. Typically, SSI circuits contain up to a few tens of logic gates or fewer than about 100 transistors per IC.
SSI ICs are mainly used to perform basic logic functions such as AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR gates, simple flip-flops, and basic arithmetic or control operations. They were widely used in early computers, calculators, and digital systems.
Although largely replaced by higher levels of integration, SSI remains important for learning, simple circuit designs, and applications where minimal functionality, ease of troubleshooting, and low complexity are required.
