Flat-plate solar collectors are the most common type of solar thermal collectors, designed to absorb sunlight and convert it into heat for water or air heating. They consist of a dark, heat-absorbing plate housed inside an insulated box with a transparent glass or plastic cover. A fluid (usually water or antifreeze solution) circulates through tubes attached to the absorber plate, carrying the heat to a storage tank or directly into a heating system.
They are simple, durable, and cost-effective, making them ideal for residential and commercial solar water heating in areas with moderate to high sunlight. However, they are less efficient than evacuated tube collectors in very cold or cloudy climates, as they lose more heat to the environment.
