Passive solar water heaters are simple, low-maintenance systems that rely on natural circulation and gravity (instead of pumps or controllers) to move water through solar collectors into a storage tank. They are generally less expensive and easier to install than active systems but are also less efficient since they don’t actively control water flow.
These systems work best in warm and sunny climates, where there is minimal risk of freezing. Passive designs typically come in two types:
Integral Collector-Storage (ICS): The collector and storage tank are combined, and water is heated directly by sunlight.
Thermosyphon Systems: Water circulates naturally as warm water rises into the tank and cooler water flows down into the collector.
