Spandex, also known as Elastane (and branded as Lycra® in some markets), is a highly elastic synthetic fiber that is widely used to create stretchable fabrics. Made from a polyurethane-based polymer, spandex is renowned for its exceptional elasticity — it can stretch up to 5–8 times its original length and return to shape without losing strength or integrity.
Spandex is rarely used alone; it is usually blended in small percentages (2–30%) with other fibers such as cotton, polyester, or nylon to impart stretch and recovery while retaining the base fiber’s characteristics. Fabrics containing spandex are soft, lightweight, and form-fitting, providing excellent comfort and freedom of movement.
