Zener diodes are special-purpose semiconductor diodes designed to operate reliably in reverse bias. Unlike ordinary diodes, which block reverse current, a Zener diode allows current to flow backward once the applied voltage reaches a specific value called the Zener breakdown voltage (Vz).
This unique property makes Zener diodes ideal for voltage regulation and voltage reference applications. When connected in reverse bias across a load, the Zener diode maintains a nearly constant output voltage, even if the input voltage or load current changes.
