A Ratchet Type Load Binder (also called a ratchet “chain binder” or load tensioner) is a mechanical device used to tighten chains and secure heavy cargo during transport. It features a ratcheting mechanism—combining a screw thread and a lever—that allows for gradual, precise tensioning of the chain without requiring excessive force. Unlike lever binders, ratchet binders provide better control and reduce the risk of sudden “kickback” when releasing tension. Ratchet binders are typically made of robust forged steel and are used in lashing systems (for road, rail, or marine transport) to ensure stable and safe load restraint. They must be used in-line and are designed purely for load restraint (not lifting).
