Mechanical flow meters are devices used to measure the flow rate or volume of liquids and gases by relying on the movement of internal mechanical components that respond to fluid motion. Unlike electronic or ultrasonic meters, these operate without external power, making them durable, cost-effective, and widely used in industries where ruggedness and reliability are more important than ultra-high accuracy.
Common types include positive displacement (PD) meters, turbine meters, paddle wheel meters, and variable area (rotameters). The fluid passing through the meter causes moving parts (such as gears, impellers, or floats) to rotate or shift proportionally to the flow rate. The movement is then displayed directly on a dial or transmitted to a counter/indicator.
