Chromium is a metallic element that is commonly found in chromite ore. The only ore of chromium is the mineral chromite, with over 99% found in southern Africa and Zimbabwe. Chromite is used to produce ferrochrome, which is then used to produce stainless steel and heat-resistant steel alloys. The main global producers of chromite are South Africa, India, Kazakhstan, and Turkey, with South Africa alone producing around half of global chromite supply.
